Paper Making

I have just attempted to make a sample of paper from recycled magazines. To start, i cut the magazines into small pieces and added water. This had to be left for a couple of hours to soak until it had gone soft and mushy. While i left the scraps of paper to soak, i went to buy a small hand blender and a splatter screen. I then used the blender to blend the mushy paper scraps into a thick pulp, and pressed them onto the splatter screen, which acted as a cheaper alternative to – and was more accessible than – a mould and deckle. Once i had squeezed enough water out, the paper has to be left to dry. From researching online, this could take up to a few days to dry.

The paper is looking an overall grey colour as i had mixed lots of different coloured paper. I would like to pick specific colours to blend to create an overall colour taken from the tree forecast for earthed and inspired by my satellite imagery. I am happy with the speckled look that it has as i feel it is a camouflaged pattern like the patterns seen in earth.

I don’t have much time to complete my 10 samples for this project, and this is very time consuming. I wanted to use this as a test piece and wait until it had dried before i continued to experiment further, however, I’m going to have to make some more now to save some time.

Biodegradable textiles project

Here are some examples of some pieces that i have made for my Level 5 Field retrieval project; Biodegradable textiles for lingerie.

These have been inspired by ‘natures veins’ such as rock and sediment layers in earth, camouflaged patterns and ariel views. I have recycled paper magazines and manipulated them to create patterns by tearing, cutting, layering and weaving them. My next aim is to make my own sheets of paper. I would like to turn the recycled magazine paper into something thats completely unrecognisable as they once were. By putting the paper into a blender and making a pulp, the prints of the magazine will not be seen anymore, hopefully producing speckled patterns like what can be seen within natures grains.

Consultancy; Initial Idea’s

After trend researching and visiting the IG Design Group warehouse, i already have some idea on what direction i would like to go in to, should i be accepted into Level 6.

I am inspired by the WGSN trend forecast ‘Creative Manifesto’ for S/S ’19. This trend is influenced by self expression and creativity and includes bold, primary colours with a graphic style. I kept this trend in mind while walking around the IG Design Group warhorse and i felt as though it would be applicable to the birthday event section of their everyday market. The primary colours would make my collection suitable for both male and female, while the graphic, expressionist style would be suitable for both adult and children.

I would like to design for IG Design group’s Giftmaker Collection where i will be producing a co-ordinatin range of paper based greetings products to include a gift wrap roll and sheet, gift bag, gift tag, ribbon, gift bow and a greeting card. I have chosen Option 1 as i feel as though my theme will enable me to have lots of fun when designing and coordinating my designs and because i don’t feel confident in option 2, which includes producing a range of 8 gift cards.

During this module i would like to focus on being a printer and a stitcher. When thinking about combining the brief with my chosen theme i have decided i would like to make the most out of all workshops and already have ideas on creating designs that involve screen printing, hand embroidery, and appliqué. I would like to experiment with making paper out of recycled materials such as egg boxes and old magazines as well as incorporating confetti that i will make myself to create a speckled and fun birthday print. I would also like to experiment with other arts and crafts such as using yarn to create pompoms and fringing that could be used for an alternative to ribbon.

I am inspired by the likes of Liz Payne, an Australian based artist who explores the combination of ‘art’ and ‘craft’. She combines paint and thread to create a variety of artworks that are bold and colourful and creates textured expressionist prints.

IG Design Group trip

While i catch up with Level 5 modules, it is important that I keep up to date with Level 6 modules in hope that i can rejoin the course as soon as possible!  I arranged a trip to IG Design Group where they presented to us a live brief that we will be following during the new term. Should I be accepted onto Level 6, the company will be meeting with us for formative feedback throughout the project and rewards once we have completed the project.

To start, the Head of Creative, Sarah Barker, gave us an overview of the company.  IG Design group are a design group who design, manufacture, source and distribute products under the categories of celebration, stationary and creative play. I was surprised to learn just how big the company is, with operations in Europe, Aisa, America and Australia. Some of their customers include Tesco, Poundland and Ikea. As a company, IG Design group feel as though it is important to consider sustainability and the environment and make effort to educe waste and recycle materials.

We then had a tour of the studios, offices, and showrooms where we saw the design process in motion. It was great to see everything begin from the trend research and initial designs being drawn to the studios where prototypes of final designs were being made and then to the graphic design department where the products would be photographed for magazines and finally the showrooms.

I feel as though this is a great opportunity that i do not want to miss and I hope that I can progress onto level 6 so that I can work on this project as soon as possible.

Field Level 5 Completion

 

As discussed with Sally, i will be undertaking a new project in order to complete my level 5 Field module. This project will go under the theme of ‘Biodegradable textiles for lingerie’. I aim to create a minimum of 10 samples, drawing inspiration from my subject module theme of ‘Satellite imagery’. I will also be supporting these designs with CAD visuals in order to provide a visual representation of what these samples may look like on key pieces of lingerie for Autumn/Winter ’17/18.
I have chosen to use paper as my biodegradable textile for this project. I have collected free magazines from various high street fashion shops which i aim to manipulate into various textures and patterns inspired by WGSN’s women’s textile’s trend forecast for Autumn/Winter ’17/18, which i have previously researched within my Subject Module. Techniques that i will use will be: collaging, cutting, layering, weaving, stitching, and folding/pleating. From this i will be creating designs that reflect patterns taken from WGSN’s Earthed trend forecast such as ‘Chameleon stripes’, ‘Camouflaged’, ‘Raw grain’, and woven tweeds.
I will document all experimentation in an a4 sketchbook, as well as keeping a diary on my blog. Finally, i will professionally mount my 10 designs with supporting CAD visuals.

Formative assessment and self reflective statement

I have just reached my formative assessment point and the end of the term. Many of the submission criteria are not completed, however, i am really happy with how far i’ve come over the past month or so.

I have chosen to design a collection of digital prints for British interior, fashion and lifestyle company House of Hackney. Displayed above, are 6 of my designs that i chose to display for my oral presentation. They are all digitally printed, paper prototypes and are inspired by satellite imagery.

Although i have succeeded in presenting 6 of my designs on paper, i have failed to present any of my designs in fabric or shown evidence of specialist techniques such as print, dye or stitch – this is because i did not yet have any completed and will therefore be marked as a non submission. I would love to get some of these designs digitally printed and foil printed. I would also love to use devore and puff binder, particularly with the designs that show different shades of colour.

I will also be marked as a non submission for presenting a design in at least 2 different colour ways as i had a misunderstanding of what this meant.  I assumed that this was to show one of our designs as different colour ways within our chosen colour chips. However, after discussing this with Keiriene and the other students during the feedback point, i now know that they are supposed to be presented in alternative colour ways outside of our chosen colour chips in order to present to the client that as a designer i am able to work within alternative colours.

I also received some positive feedback such as that my designs have been mounted and presented nicely. I agree with this. Helen had also taught me to use celotape as well as double sided tape so that i can replace my designs without ripping the paper if i need to. Other feedback was that my oral presentation skills were good and that all of my designs flow and co-ordinate together. I initially chose the bottom 3 designs as co-ordinates, but it is possible that they could all be seen together.

As they are all in digital format, they are versatile and can be printed onto fabric, paper or ceramics – i can particularly see these designs on a wide range of stationery products. The other students suggested that i should create CAD visuals to display this and to show my designs within different scales for different products

As this is a formative assessment point, i still have until the summative feedback point, June 5th, to complete my collection – I aim to be very busy until then! I really enjoy formative assessment points and oral presentations to other students as it produces constructive feedback that i am able to work on. It is also a chance for others to point out somethings that i would not have noticed and to see what other peoples opinions are on my designs. Once i have received my written feedback i will use it to correct and move forward with this project.

For the previous formative assessment point in December, i was marked as a non-submission due to not presenting the work that i had completed up to date. I had delivered a pecha kucha, but my presentation skills were extremely poor and my attendance had been also. I have really made a huge improvement since then and i hope that this shows through my work. I have orally presented my work which has helped me as i have received feedback to work from and my attendance has improved which has helped my understanding of the project a lot more and made my experience more enjoyable.
